Inglourious Basterds | The Most Cryptic Movie Villain
Hans Landa isn't just an intimidating detective. He is an actor and an enigma.
Ever since the release of Quentin Tarantino's Inglourious Basterds in 2009, people have been adding Colonel Hans Landa to their list of the most iconic movie villains of all time - I don't blame them. As jaded as the list may seem, villain aside, you have to admit Landa is one heck of a character.
But why? We know he has his ways with words, and we know he is a great detective, a master manipulator, a narcissistic opportunist, but a weirdly comedic loser at certain points. Yet, we do not really 'know' what he stands for; yes, you would be right to say he stands for himself - a self-absorbed prick who will do any...

THIS is How You Build Tension in a Film
Просмотров 77 тыс.2 месяца назад
This brutal crime film was way too intense for my anxious brain, but in the best way possible. And most people have never even heard of it: Pusher 3. One thing I appreciate about Nicolas Winding Refn films is that they know how to build good tension. It doesn't matter if it's a film about a driver on a vengeful quest, or a young model trying to be the next best thing. It's ALWAYS INTENSE. One u...
Event Horizon is STILL Disturbing

I actually couldn't revisit this film for over ten years because it ruined my childhood so hard. Of course, the rewatch (which only happened last year) was nothing like the first time - it wasn't as scary, as well made, or even serious as I remembered. That's fair. It happens. BUT I thought that it's a film that didn't age like milk (huge asterisk there), and that there are more clever tricks u...
Green Room's Unexpected Terror

There's this one movie scene that disturbed me so much on my initial watch that I had to take a minute to regain my composure before resuming. That scene was from Jeremy Saulnier's 2015 work, Green Room. If you know, you know. But why? Why is it so disturbing? Violent? Shocking? Is it the gore? the acting? Or is it something else? Green Room is a film about expectations - well, not thematically...
The Anxious Perspective of Good Time
Просмотров 42 тыс.5 месяцев назад
Can a film simulate a full blown panic attack? How could a film make the audience feel anxious, without showing something awful? Safdie Brothers' Good Time (2017) does exactly that - although like I say in the video, it's more of a trigger for me than a one to one representation of what panic attacks feel like. And yes, I am very well versed with panic attacks (unfortunately) and I do say that ...
Nightcrawler | Cinema's Most Chilling Character

How do you depict a psychopathic character in a film? Is it just about the acting, or is there more to it that is actually 'cinematic'? In fact, what even is a psychopath? Is that a real thing? (hint - in terms of diagnosis, no it's not.) Louis Bloom from Dan Gilroy's Nightcrawler (2014) is one of my favourite films when it comes to effectively portraying a bone-chilling psychopathic (or sociop...

Have you noticed how Mia is ALWAYS in YELLOW? What about the fact that the entire film is graded in shades of BLUE? And the sounds? The Hidden Details of Beau is Afraid

What does Hereditary and Beau is Afraid have in common? MISDIRECTION. Like how Hereditary's true force turns out to be Annie's mother Ellen, Beau is Afraid is NOT about Beau, but about Mona. But what's really fascinating about this is HOW Ari Aster misdirects you into thinking Annie or Beau is the true protagonist of these films. Let's take a look at what kind of tricks and symbols Ari Aster ha...

Climax | The Most Anxious Film Ever?

Gaspar Noé films are notoriously difficult to watch, and I've covered three of them. Climax (2018), while considered by many of his avid fans as inferior to his other works, are widely known as his most 'anxious' - or should it be 'insane' - film to date, and I do not disagree. But what makes Climax such a nerve-racking experience? Technically, the prize goes to the film's use of 'sounds', espe...

Why does this film affect us the way it does, and is it really just another scary non-horror film? Perfect Blue | Dissecting The Most Terrifying Animated Film

Satoshi Kon's Perfect Blue is widely considered the best psychological thriller ever made. It certainly gave ME nightmares back in the days, and the best part about it all is that, while it's one terrifying work to watch, it's also an incredibly well made film, and quite beautiful in that regard. While there are, therefore, plenty of dissections and analysis on this masterpiece, I rarely see an...

Very insightful analysis! This is an old video so I doubt you’ll even see this, but there’s one thing I’d love to get your thoughts on. You mention that Cache never reveals the culprit behind the tapes, and yet later in the video you fixate on the shot that I believe does reveal them. Maybe that shot is slightly open ended, as the takeaway must be inferred rather than explicitly understood, but i would be interested to know how you interpret that last revelation. Again, great work.

It was an interesting take and had some insightful ideas. But..I think the audience was indeed made to see these situations thru Lous eyes..and maybe not even that Lou was a psychopath. But that Lou had an effecient and ambitious way at getting ahead in a psychotic system that rewards such behaviours and attitudes. Perhaps Lou just recognized the way the world really works, And that was what was truly disturbing about the film.

There is quite a similar scene in The Ring, when she first crawls out of the well. I think the actor also walked backwards and the footage is reversed which also gives it a unnatural walk pattern. It does have a bit teleportation and static effects later but the first seconds are very eerie just watching her crawl out and walk towards the camera.

Christ is God in the flesh, came to free us from rebellion: annihilation. The enemy destroys things just to recreate them, the caterpillar liquefaction & rebirth as a ‘butterfly’ but a carnivorous butterfly - not one that drinks nectar (of The Lord’s waters of life). The enemy ‘scrambles’ God’s Word with lies, radio waves, etc. making fractals of origination - because he will be destroyed by God for his rebellion & want’s creations annihilation to go down with his demonic ‘ship.’ The enemy uses all good things for evil, anything can be made into a weapon - the inversion of creation, cannibalizing each other to live (or even worse, killing for pleasure or no good reason: insanity). But what’s worse is, the enemy decided to rebel & be like God for no good reason other than himself vs. selflessness (which God is): so the enemy now tries to annihilate for no good reason, other than the core reason of being discontent with his existence (he was made perfect to begin with, trying to be more perfect than perfect is a logical spiritually fallacy). Fear is ‘unknown’ & ‘destruction’ - disorder without The Lord holding things together; in Spirit & physical Truth which The Lord is the author of. We are born imperfect, after sin nature (in the the disorder of creation) & we can accept The Lord’s Order or to be with the enemies eternal annihilation.

She was so hurt when she got insulted from the protagonist that she vanished. Why would he (Ben) visit him at a remote place thinking of meeting her? Furthermore in the last call you can hear one person walking away - not running! And someone said get lost. I think that she wanted to stop beeing a prostitute for Ben

I haven't seen these films, but had lived in Denmark for about 7 years, and I am always a little shocked when I see Danish actors where I'm not really looking for them. These kinds of films, this may be part of the "dogma" films, are always so bleak. The other thing I've noticed in they tend to use extremely grainy film. I think I find it slightly disturbing because Copenhagen is beautiful and inviting. It doesn't feel menacing, or run down. I'm not saying there aren't parts like that, but I see glimpses of places in this video I know pretty well, that I associate with fairly warm feelings, then seeing it in such a harsh light is jarring. If you want a bit of a laugh from the actor playing Milo, look for his beer commercials. "Inge kiinke klanke." Or something like that. :)

I'd say Christian Bale as Patrick Bateman or Heath Ledger's Joker from The Dark Knight are my favorite cinematic psychopaths (which sounds weird 🤔). Great breakdown of Jake Gyllenhaal's performance as Louis Bloom the Nightcrawler psychopath which was awesome 😎. I'm surprised he didn't win an Oscar 😔. I've dealt with psychopathic and sociopathic individuals in high school and college when I was a teenager which is why I'm a 24 year old counselor and teacher who also teaches Christian Apologetics online. This has nothing to do with the video but please listen if you want to otherwise leave it alone and ignore it. Hello my name is Justin and I'm a Christian and Apologist but I'm also a college graduate. I'm not a closed minded Theist as I have nothing against Atheists or unbelievers as I speak to them often to understand their reasons for unbelief but we as Christians are convinced of God's Existence due to many real factors). I'm not trying to convert anyone or convince anyone to become Christians as that's The Holy Spirit's job to help people believe but only explain why I believe in Jesus Christ. There's actually evidence of God's Existence in Christianity. First of all there's proof that Jesus of Nazareth existed in history since the writings of Tacitus, Josephus Flavius, Pliny the younger and other historical documents prove that He was living two thousand years ago that even scholars both religious and Atheists agree with historically speaking but not that He's The Divine Son of God because obviously they don't. I'm going to give you historical and archeological evidence for God's Existence as The Scriptures have prophecies that predate the events recorded in them by several millennia including Matthew, Hosea and Zechariah which prophesy accurately of the people of Israel becoming a nation again after over 1900 years of being scattered around the nations since the destruction of the Temple in Jerusalem in 70 A.D. spoken of by Christ in Matthew 23:29-24:3 and returning to their homeland after The Holocaust with Jerusalem as their capital in 1948 exactly as Jesus The Christ said. The prophets including Daniel spoke of the time where several world empires would arise and fall including the Babylonian kingdom, Medes and Persians, Roman Empire, and Saladin and the Muslims which went in consecutive order for the past few millennia. The people of Israel becoming a nation after The Holocaust in 1948 (ironically the melting point of gold as God compares Israel to gold that's tested in fire in Zechariah 13:8 and Jeremiah 16:15) exactly how Jesus The Christ said would happen since God us everything to come in The Scriptures and not just because people were working towards as Atheists claim which are impossible for any regular man to predict. Just before anyone says Christianity is a white man's religion made to oppress blacks during slavery you obviously aren't aware that the first Christians were Jews in The Middle East and that Christianity just like any religion can be used by evil and corrupt people to oppress others but you forget that the first Abolitionists/Civil Rights activists were Christians who sought to abolish slavery, racism, segregation, injustice and prejudice throughout American history. Jesus The Christ loves you enough not to give you what we all deserve which is God's Wrath by His Own Blood. Charles Darwin didn't originally come up with The Theory of Evolution over 200 years ago as it is mentioned in the writings of Ancient Greeks who believed in Demons that gave knowledge to philosophers. Evolution makes no sense when nothing has evolved after thousands of years of human history and supposedly the first creature came from primordial sludge several millions of years ago funny how they won't believe that God an Eternal Almighty Spirit Being created us from the Earth) which came from a supermassive expansion of matter at high temperature that inexplicably created everything in the known universe that supposedly came from nothing billions of years ago. How did the organs evolve before there were bones, skin, substance and how did any creatures see before eyes evolved? I've studied evolution and abiogenesis in the past and read Darwin's " Origin of The Species" and I'm not convinced of macro Evolutionary biology whereas I accept micro Evolution like speciation and adaptation but not macro Evolution because there's no evidence of it nor clear observable examples of it where living creatures evolve into other kinds of species plus the fact that fossils don't show evidence of evolution and genetic entropy rules out evolution. The question begs how did two genders evolve from a common ancestor with a perfectly hospitable and sustainable environment with breathable oxygen and resources to survive on inexplicably? Atheists have the burden of proof to explain how everything came to be and why our existence is possible without the Existence of God from an godless perspective just as Christians have to provide evidence of God's Existence and the validity of His Word. Evolution requires life to already exist in order to take any effect in living organisms so it doesn't account for the existence of Life and reality. Also evolution is impossible because it goes against The Law of entropy and the second Law of thermodynamics because evolution makes things better whereas nothing continues to get better but decays and turns to absolute destruction in the end. Mark Ridley an Evolutionist said "No evolutionist whether gradualist or punctuationist uses the fossil record as evidence in favor of The Theory of Darwinian Evolution as opposed to special Creation". God's Existence is made perfectly known and observable in the universe as demonstrated in His Handiwork in the intelligently designed manner that Creation was made, human consciences and consciousness historical and archaeological evidence of God's Word being valid history, fulfillment of Bible Prophecies God in His Holiness and Righteousness could give us what we deserve in Hell for our since but He's merciful to give us free will to choose to accept or reject His gift of salvation by grace through faith in His Son Jesus. Psychologist here, I wanted to clear something up: "Psychopathy" is the commonly used term for "Anti-Social Personality Disorder". "Sociopathy" is a term popularized by Hollywood and doesn't actually mean anything. No, don't argue with me. Go the DSM5 and the ICD-10 and look it up. You won't find any reference to "sociopathy", anywhere in either book, because it isn't a real diagnostic term and it never has been. That being said this video is excellent. I have liked and subscribed. Thank you.

You're mistaken. You said this occurred in 1943. It couldn't possibly. This has to be 1941 during Operation Barbarossa when Germany first invaded the Soviet Union and the Red Army was on the retreat and needing partisans to volunteer to slow the German advance for the time being. Germany would've been on the retreat in 1943, and no longer erasing villages from the map. That all would've occurred in 1941.

The only thing disturbing thing about Event Horizon is that, by many accounts, we've missed out on some great effects and gore - and for no good reason.
